State Employees Contribute More than $4.3 million Local Charities
Sacramento - SACRAMENTO—More than 21,000 state employees in Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties pledged more than $4.3 million to local nonprofit organizations through the California State Employees Charitable Campaign, according to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, who chaired the 2006 campaign. “We’re still finalizing the totals, but at this point, we can say that the state employees in this region were the most generous they’ve ever been, with an increase of about 5.5 percent over last year,” O’Connell said. “My thanks go out to the State Leadership Team and the hundreds of volunteers who did so much for our community.” O’Connell announced the results at a celebration sponsored by Accenture, at which several individuals and departments were honored for their efforts during the campaign. Terry Myrrdin of the Secretary of State’s office received the Outstanding Leadership Award, Melissa Martinez of the Office of the Governor was named Department Chair of the Year, and California Highway Patrol’s Andrew H. Hill was named Loaned Executive of the Year. The Office of the Governor received the Ruby Slipper Award for having the highest percentage increase in funds raised at nearly 800 percent, and more than 30 state departments received the Red Shoe Award for increasing funds raised by at least 20 percent. The Red Shoe and Ruby Slipper awards were named for a former state campaign fundraiser who feared he could not fill his female predecessor’s shoes. The State and Consumer Services Division was given the Spirit of California Award for increasing overall community support, raising more than $1,080,000. O’Connell was honored as chair, and Accenture was named Outstanding Sponsor. Accenture executive Doug Kim said, “Accenture is pleased to be a major sponsor of the campaign and this event for the third consecutive year. As a United Way board member, I know first-hand the key role this campaign plays in supporting vital community programs.” Established in 1957, the California State Employees Charitable Campaign is a statewide fundraising effort. The campaign is managed by United Way California Capital Region in Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties.
